Directional or omni controls?

The two approaches differ in how much directional input you provide. The official Swordmastery bulletin describes both as supported ways to play; manual direction is not a prerequisite for entering combat.

ApproachWhat it controlsWhat still needs your attention
Omniattack / omniblockSelects the direction of an attack or block automaticallyWhen to act, your position and your available resources
Directional attack / blockLets you choose an angle directlyThe incoming attack cue and the response you commit to

For a first encounter, separate two questions: where is the attack coming from, and when will it connect? Automatic direction reduces one input decision. It does not turn every defensive action into a perfectly timed parry.

Read the HUD before spending resources

Fextralife’s combat reference distinguishes these resources and indicators:

IndicatorPurpose
HealthTracks Coen’s remaining health
StaminaUsed for attacks, sprinting and omniblocking
Activation ChargesUsed to activate abilities; the gold emblem sits above the health bar
Incoming direction cueShows the angle to answer with a directional block

The same reference reports that successful attacks and blocks help refill Activation Charges, and that a successful directional block does not spend stamina. Treat these as separate systems: having enough health does not mean an ability has the charge it needs.

What changes after sunset?

Swordmastery remains available at night. The change adds vampiric options rather than removing all sword techniques. Daytime offers Witchcraft; nighttime brings claws and Vampirism. The day and night comparison explains the broader difference, including traversal.

A useful practice sequence

This is an editorial learning sequence based on those mechanics, not a tested boss-winning combo:

  1. Watch one incoming cue before committing to repeated attacks.
  2. Practise the response with enough stamina available to recover if you miss.
  3. Add an ability only after checking its Activation Charge requirement.
  4. Revisit the same decisions after a phase change; your available powers differ.

For the decision clock outside the fight, see which actions spend time. Combat itself does not run down a real-time countdown.
